Born in the year 1907 in Begampur a remote village in West Bengal’s Hooghly district. Born into a family dependent on the income derived from growing betel leaf, young Gobardhan who showed a keen interest in art from a young age, was allowed to come to Calcutta to pursue his ‘ardent desire for art training.’ His timing may be considered perfect as his training allowed him to participate in what has been termed ‘a serious turn in the art scene of Bengal.’ He had the privilege of studying under some of the best tutors in the field of fine arts — DP Roy Choudhury at the Madras College of Arts and Crafts and Atul Bose at the Calcutta College of Arts and Crafts.
