Tapan Ray Chaudhuri, born in 1944 had his early training in drawing with Prof. B.D. Ganguly of P.G.B.T. College at Banipur, 24 Parganas (N). During 1973-76, he associated with Late Atul Bose and learnt a great deal of portrait-painting from the master. He has taken part in paint a full-size portrait of Late Jadu Bhatta, the renowned Dhrupadia, which was installed in the auditorium built at the maestro’s own place at Bishnupur in Bankura. His other works can be seen in Calcutta University and Emami Art Gallery, Kolkata. In 2008, Sri Ray Chaudhuri held his Solo Exhibition of 25 Portraits of Rabindranath Tagore (Oil & Pastel) entitle “Thou hast made me endless” at the Chitrakoot Art Gallery in Kolkata. The exhibition, continued throughout a week, was visited by a wide number of persons and acclaimed and admired by the specialists in the art of painting. Besides these, he is a regular exhibitor and his creations are regularly showcased in different Art Galleries.

In 1990, Sri Ray Chaudhuri obtained his Ph.D. degree from the University of Calcutta for his work on the Art of portraiture in Eighteenth Century British Poetry and Painting. At present he is engaged in writing another book on the Art of Landscape in Romantic Poetry and Painting.

Besides literature and painting, the passions of Dr. Ray Chaudhuri are Instrumental Music (Esraj).
